Nowadays, many people do not appreciate their rights to vote but they do not know that for them to be able to have the right to vote, many generations have fought for years. When the United States was found, only white men with property can vote, the rest included white working men, women and African American were not allowed to vote. They have fought hard and die for the rights to vote. If somebody ever asks an American nowadays a question about when did women get the right to vote, they will receive an answer such as “it's in the U.S Constitution”, it is not true since in the beginning, there was nothing such as “the right to vote” in the Amendments of the States, these things were only added later in the Amendments to the Constitution. The right to vote was only taking its first step into the Constitution with the end of Civil War and follow later by the right to vote for women in the 1920s. And Thanks to the pressure by Dr. Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement, in the 1970s, we have a completed Voting Right Act that that allows everyone over the age of 18 to vote.
“When did women get the right to vote” is a question that many of us should ask and look for an answer nowadays since it is a greatest achievement in the history of mankind. Women long before were considered lower than men and many generations have fought for the rights for women. In the States, this can be traced back as far as 1770s and by the year 1848, with the Seneca Falls Convention, a beginning step for granting women the right to vote has come together for the first time. It would be successful if not slowed down by the Civil War that happened not later after. After the war, the idea was pushed hard again by two important suffragists and finally achieves the result in the year 1920s after many years of trying. Not only women but in the US's history, many people were mistreated because of their genders and skin colors. But as social continues to develop, all the obstacles have been eliminated and we have a free United States today, so that we need to treasure all the rights that we have had today since they are the results of our forefathers' long period of fighting. So everyone should vote to contribute to the society as well as for the good of their own selves. |
